I recently received the following e-mail note explaining the meaning of the photographed inscription on the base of the statue featured above.

Subject: Inscription in Pompei

"This is the transcription, fullfilling the abreviations:

L(UCIUS) SEPUNIUS L(UCI) F(ILIUS) SANDILIANUS
M(ARCUS) HERENNIUS A(ULI) F(ILIUS) EPIDIANUS
DUO VIR(I) I(URE) D(ICUNDO) SC<H>OL(AM) ET HOROL(OGIUM)
D(E) S(UA) P(EQUNIA) F(ACIUNDUM) C(OERARUNT).

Translation:

The two mairs (of Pompei) Lucius Sepunius Sandilianus, son of Lucius,and Marcus Herrenius Epidianus, son of Aulus, built together at their own expense a public seat and a sun-dial.
